For many Americans, music is more than entertainment. It is the soundtrack of first loves, family road trips, summer nights, and unforgettable moments shared with friends. That is why the month of May 2026 felt especially difficult for music lovers. In just a few short weeks, the world lost several remarkable artists whose talent helped shape generations of listeners.

From jazz clubs and concert halls to classic rock arenas and soul music stages, these musicians left behind legacies that will continue to inspire fans for years to come.

Among the most significant losses was Sonny Rollins, the legendary jazz saxophonist known around the world as the "Saxophone Colossus." Sonny Rollins passed away at the age of 95, bringing to a close one of the most celebrated careers in jazz history.

For decades, Sonny Rollins was considered one of the greatest improvisational musicians ever to pick up a saxophone. His groundbreaking albums, including Saxophone Colossus, influenced generations of jazz artists and helped define modern jazz. His creativity, confidence, and unmistakable sound made him one of the last true giants of the golden age of American jazz.

The classic rock community also mourned the loss of Dick Parry, the renowned saxophonist whose unforgettable performances became part of Pink Floyd history. Dick Parry passed away at age 83.

Fans immediately remembered his iconic saxophone solos on timeless Pink Floyd classics such as Money, Us and Them, Wish You Were Here, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Those emotional performances helped create some of the most recognizable moments in rock music. David Gilmour paid tribute to his longtime friend, highlighting a musical partnership that stretched back decades.

Another heartbreaking loss came with the passing of Alex Ligertwood, the Scottish-born vocalist best known for his years as lead singer with Santana. He passed away at age 79.

Alex Ligertwood's powerful voice became a defining part of Santana's sound during the late 1970s and 1980s. Fans still cherish hits such as Winning and Hold On, where his soulful vocals perfectly blended with Carlos Santana's legendary guitar work. Remarkably, Alex continued performing well into his later years and remained deeply connected to the music he loved.

Southern soul music also lost a pioneer with the passing of Jimmy Hughes at age 88.

His 1964 hit Steal Away helped establish the famous Muscle Shoals sound that would later influence artists across multiple genres. Jimmy Hughes brought honesty and emotion to every performance, helping build the foundation of Southern soul music. His contributions remain an important part of American music history.

The music world also said goodbye to Clarence Carter, who passed away at age 90.

Known for beloved songs such as Patches, Slip Away, and Strokin', Clarence Carter built a career that combined humor, storytelling, and emotional depth. Despite being blind since childhood, he became one of the most recognizable voices in soul and rhythm and blues. His recordings continue to entertain fans decades after their release.

Completing this remarkable group of artists was Georg "Jojje" Wadenius, who passed away at age 80.

An acclaimed guitarist known for his work with Blood, Sweat & Tears, the Saturday Night Live Band, Roberta Flack, and many other celebrated performers, Georg Wadenius earned tremendous respect from fellow musicians. His versatility allowed him to move effortlessly between rock, jazz, pop, and fusion music.

While each artist came from a different musical background, they shared one important gift: the ability to bring people together through music.

Their songs and performances helped define generations. They provided comfort during difficult times, joy during celebrations, and memories that remain deeply personal to millions of fans.

As we remember Sonny Rollins, Dick Parry, Alex Ligertwood, Jimmy Hughes, Clarence Carter, and Georg Wadenius, we are reminded that great music never truly fades away. Their recordings will continue to inspire listeners for generations to come.
